MONT-SAINT-MICHEL

Visiting Mont-Saint-Michel feels like stepping into a fantasy novel. The island village, crowned with a dramatic abbey and surrounded by shifting tides, had been on our bucket list for years—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Whether you're drawn by the history, architecture, or the sheer magic of the setting, this place is unforgettable.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the best mix of mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer is busiest, while winter has a quiet, moody charm. We visited in mid May and it was not that crowded yet!

How Long to Stay

One day is enough to explore, but staying overnight lets you see Mont-Saint-Michel at sunrise, sunset and under the stars—2 to 3 days gives you enough time to witness the changing tides and different weather conditions, too (this is what we did and experienced storms, sun, clouds, rainbows, all of it)!

How to Get Around

The best is by car. You can park on the mainland and take the shuttle or walk (about 40 minutes). There are also trains from Paris to Pontorson, then a shuttle bus. The island itself is pedestrian-only. Be prepared for cobbled streets and stairs—but that’s all part of the charm. Comfortable shoes are a must!

Attractions

The main highlight is the abbey itself—climb up through the narrow streets to explore its gothic halls and terraces. Take your time wandering the cobbled village streets, soaking in the medieval atmosphere. The ramparts offer beautiful views over the bay, especially during sunrise or sunset. Don’t miss the chance to witness the dramatic tides that rush in and out around the island—it's a natural show unlike anything we've seen.

Where to Stay

There are small hotels and guesthouses on the island, which offer a completely different atmosphere in the early morning and evening, once the day visitors have left. Or you can stay in nearby Pontorson or Beauvoir for a quieter (and often more affordable) option. We stayed in an Airbnb in Courtils which is just a few minutes from the island.

Local Food

Most restaurants cater to tourists, but if you stay overnight, you’ll enjoy a more peaceful meal. Don’t miss trying the famous omelette at La Mère Poulard—a bit of a tourist tradition! We found only few restaurants on the mainland side of the area, but if you don't mind driving, there are some great options in nearby towns as well. Check our personal recommendations for places we ate at in our e-book.
